Freya Schafer: A surprising match between science and EFT Life CoachingClarity & insight are the driving forces in both science and EFT Life Coaching. For the scientist it might mean finding a new cure; for the Life Coach it means helping clients achieve their goals and be successful in their careers. I find that my scientific background gives me a natural skill set for coaching. The “detective work” of science is what drew me to become a scientist. I always loved looking for clues and pieces of the puzzle until the whole picture emerged. Coaching provides me with the same scenario but also with the bonus of having a direct positive impact on the careers and lives of my clients. As a scientist I asked broad, challenging questions such as "How can I improve cancer treatments?" To solve the problem I broke the quest into smaller insightful questions: "Will radicals destroy the tumor?" "Do antioxidants protect the healthy tissue during treatment?" Then I investigated the problem from all sides, looking for different perspectives and keeping an open mind. The skills of an outstanding scientist are also essential for coaching. Analytical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, tenaciousness, brainstorming and intuition are needed to solve scientific problems. I use the same skill set to help my Life Coaching clients gain clarity and insight and move towards their goals. As a scientist I learned first-hand what it means to get stuck, how to retrace my steps and go down another path, how to stay motivated through rough times and stay focused on the goal. As a scientist I became used to working on the edge – that area where no-one has been before – where I had to discover my own answers. I learned the practical value of using unorthodox techniques such as day-dreaming and doodling – and of following my intuition in unexpected directions. Coaching presents me with similar challenges: How can I best assist a new client – someone with new territories and new situations to explore? I find the process fascinating and exhilarating -- and very rewarding, too, as I watch my clients achieve their goals. More about Freya Schafer: Hobbies and InterestsDancing through Life![]() My purpose in life is to inspire people to be successful in their careers and live the life they love. Through coaching and public speaking I reach a broad audience and connect with many people. Dancing is another wonderful way to interact with friends and strangers alike and it is one of my favorite ways to inspire and connect with people. ![]() My favorite kinds of dancing fall under the category of Community Dancing: Contra Dancing and English Country Dancing (http://www.fairfolk.org). Both are group dances that allow me to connect with many different dancers during each dance. I deeply enjoy the playfulness, the flirtation, the movement to beautiful music, and the love each dancer brings to the floor. Moving as one with a whole group or losing oneself in a waltz creates a deep emotional bond and inspires the soul. Nature, my peaceful havenPhotography and hiking allows me to get in touch with nature. The beauty and silence of nature are an important value in my life. Hiking in Maine or Montana recharges my soul, while photography is an outlet for the artist in me. In this fast-paced era of information and technology we rarely take time to slow down and smell the roses. Hiking allows me to take time to think about the really important things and to find new perspectives to challenges in life. Living my life purposeI have always been interested in professional development and self improvement. The tools I learned and the insight I gained about myself in the last decade helped me to undergo the major life transition from a scientist to a professional life coach. One of the most important insights I gained was my life purpose. Understanding that my life purpose is “to inspire and encourage people to be successful in their careers and live the life they love” was the tipping point in my mid-life change. My life purpose makes me jump out of bed in the morning rushing to meet my clients. Having successfully aligned my career with all my innate talents and skills and personalities makes it fun to live my life purpose. Life is great. Testimonial from a scientific colleague:I had the wonderful privilege of working with Dr. Schafer for over 10 years in a cancer research laboratory. A principal goal of the lab was to uncover the chemical and biochemical mechanisms behind new cancer treatments so they could be improved. Freya has outstanding problem-solving skills, be it a science problem, interpersonal relationship issue, or administrative challenge. She was exceptionally good at helping the students and staff in the lab identify their long-term goals and develop strategies, milestones, and markers to achieve their dreams. This broad range of experience along with her formal training in personal coaching from the best institutes give Freya the skills to help everyone achieve their goals. She is a joy to work with; the results are always delightful. Garry B. The University of Iowa |
